Philosophy

It has been my privilege to work in education

ever since leaving college in the mid 90’s, in a variety of settings. The prevalent theme throughout my work with all groups of learners has been my desire to individualize my teaching and to solve problems collaboratively with students, their families, and their other teachers. What I love most about teaching is the process – it is organic, with lots of discovery and change along the way. I believe that people learn best when they have enough freedom and ownership to discover and invent for themselves, with the help of a skilled coach who knows what questions to ask and what level of accountability measures to put into place.

I have experienced the joy, repeatedly, of students suddenly realizing that they know more than they used to (“Adrienne! I accidentally read some road signs this weekend!”); or enthusiastically embracing reading after describing themselves as non-readers who had never before enjoyed a book; or newly understanding how to study more effectively. I appreciate the serendipity of teaching.

I am also, of course, oriented toward results – academic and otherwise. Although I cannot make particular guarantees about results and would question anyone who does, I can guarantee that I keep measurable outcomes in mind at all times. I work with my clients and their families first to identify and prioritize their needs, then to collaboratively clarify our goals and specific roles, and next to use my knowledge, experience and creativity to try to accomplish the results we seek. Action plans and progress checks are part of our work, and ongoing assessments help to shape next steps.

I do not offer one specific program or a variety of packages. I do offer my full attention toward your particular needs, with a skill set to help those students who are struggling, frustrated, or simply in need of a little help or enrichment. I am here to help each client experience the joy of academic success and I pledge my best efforts in our collaboration toward your child’s achievement.
